Dear Valued Client,

“History provides a crucial insight regarding market crises: they are inevitable, painful and ultimately surmountable.”

– Shelby M.C. Davis, investor, philanthropist, and former VP of The Bank of New York and the Boston Bruins

Aloni Goh Wealth Strategy Notes:

Equity markets were mixed in May, with the U.S. indices higher and the TSX lower. The U.S. indices were boosted by outsized gains in big tech while the TSX was more reflective of the broader equity markets. The bottoming process is still on-going, and we expect further generally directionless action over the next few months.

We are holding our current equity allocations and positions while investing income and distributions as they come in. Stocks and bonds are very favorably priced for entry for the long term, and we advocate investing new funds to take advantage of this opportunity.

The economic and market headwinds and the volatility of the markets have put investors on guard, and rightfully so. It’s the nature of human psychology, and taking the emotions out of a painful and lengthy decision-making process is incredibly difficult. That’s why you’ve hired Aloni Goh Wealth Management to handle your investments, because we’re the ones who can help you discover the appropriate amount of risk and help guide you through rough waters. Here’s how emotions can affect your decisions, from a recent article courtesy of Fidelity:

  • Fear of not having enough money could lead to decisions based on panic rather than sound financial principles.
  • Greed can cause investors to focus on short-term gain over long-term returns.
  • Stress could impair our brain’s executive functions, causing us to avoid crucial financial tasks like budgeting and expense reviewing.
  • Joy can influence investors to make quick reactive financial decisions without considering consequences, potentially leading to overspending, taking out unnecessary debt or choosing poor investments.
